[hlcoders] Steam update broken HL2 mods?

I've been getting reports from a few dozen of our players that they've
been unable to run dystopia since the last Steam UI update. They've
been getting the following error:

AppName: hl2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: filesystem_steam.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000e66f

I'll just note that this seems to only have effect some people, as I
can still run dystopia fine on my computer as can a few other folks
i've talked to.

Anyone else having similar problems with this update?

This appearntly happens on some Windows XP, Windows 98 / 2K systems. It
affected some users on a September 27th upade, but was fixed. I guess its
back now. I am too getting the error. A thread was posted on the Steam
powered forums, with Valve saying they fixed it (when it happened on the
27th).

Yeah

Some of our mod team cannot run any of the 3 rd party mod!

I would like the update screwup the valve mod instead that would be more
fun!

One of our players found a fix for it, here's his instructions
(hopefully the same willl work for ya'll):

Create a Desktop shortcut by right clicking on Dystopia in Steam. Then
locate the new shortcut on your desktop, right-click and select
"Properties". In the "Target" field, it should say something like:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game "e:\program
files\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\dystopia"

Just change the "220" to "240" (which is the code for CS:S). I have no
idea why this works, but it does. Enjoy!!

I am unable to reproduce this problem. Can someone try a fresh Steam
install and see if it keeps happening? If it does then please email me
OFFLIST your PATH environment variable and a file listing of everything
under your Steam directory and any minidumps that were created (files
with a .mdmp extension).

We have found the problem. You get this error if your steam path has a
space in it (i.e c:\program files\valve\steam ). We are working on a
fix, in the meantime you can work around the problem by moving Steam to
a path without a space (i.e c:\steam ) and then deleting your
ClientRegistry.blob.

An even easier workaround is to create a shortcut to the mod, and edit
the -game path. Change the "program files" in the -game path to
"progra~1" and it should work.

Example:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game "C:\program
files\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\dystopia"

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game
"C:\progra~1\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\dystopia"

Hi

I've noiced that when running mod map from Hammer everything works fine.
I think that Steam produces a problem here.

ie.
M:\Steam\steam.exe -applaunch 220 -game "m:\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\project rtts"

Does not work, but when I refere straight to "hl2.exe":
[from .bat file]

@"M:\Steam\SteamApps\artanisvhe\half-life 2\hl2.exe" -dev -game "m:\steam\steamapps\SourceMods\Project RttS"

everything is okay.

Most modifications work fine right now, thanks.
Only one mod, Garry's Mod, has a problem. When it starts it said ( in
Windows ) "Extra App ID set to 320, but no SteamAppId." The only thing I
could do is clicking "OK". Then the game will be terminated.

If I'm right, AppID 320 is Half-Life2 Deathmatch. I've changed the first
line of the batch to the location of the hl2.exe of Half-Life2 Deathmatch..
But the engine still says the same thing.. "Extra App ID set to 320.....".

Anyone has an idea how to correct this?

GMod mounts a few different GFC's when it starts up.
Try running HL2DM and CS:S before running GMod (it might be that the gfc
doesn't exist or isn't decrypted).

could do is clicking "OK". Then the game will be terminated.
If I'm right, AppID 320 is Half-Life2 Deathmatch. I've changed the first
line of the batch to the location of the hl2.exe of Half-Life2
Deathmatch..
But the engine still says the same thing.. "Extra App ID set to 320.....".
Anyone has an idea how to correct this?

Hi
I've noiced that when running mod map from Hammer everything works fine.
I think that Steam produces a problem here.
ie.
M:\Steam\steam.exe -applaunch 220 -game
"m:\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\project rtts"
[from .bat file]
@"M:\Steam\SteamApps\artanisvhe\half-life 2\hl2.exe" -dev -game
"m:\steam\steamapps\SourceMods\Project RttS"
everything is okay.
Cheers

It's still not working for me.. I've created a shortcut to my desktop
without any result. On an IRC channel I've noticed that people could
change
the -applaunch id from 220 to 240 ( counter-strike: source ). It works,
but
still the most mods have errors like missed models etc..

An even easier workaround is to create a shortcut to the mod, and edit
the -game path. Change the "program files" in the -game path to
"progra~1" and it should work.
"C:Program FilesSteamSteam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game "C:program
filessteamSteamAppsSourceModsdystopia"
"C:Program FilesSteamSteam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game
"C:progra~1steamSteamAppsSourceModsdystopia"

My hl1 mod doesn't even show up in the server browser anymore, and the
server keeps saying it needs to be restarted to get the latest update;
but

it doesn't do anything.
